Getting the robots moving!

There was some robot action over the holidays in some robot team members homes, with some students getting a robot for themselves and parent helpers battling it out on Gumtree for a cheap deal. Robot fever has definitely hit Westgarth and we were all excited and looking forward to getting started and seeing the Robogals again.

We began by watching a video about the competition and the project side of the competition. Then we had a discussion about how to work in a team, there were some great suggestions and thoughts such as listening to, and trying out other peoples ideas, taking turns and asking before taking things.

We then got into groups and the more advanced group worked on guiding the robot using the touch sensors, which was really challenging, but fun.

The other groups programmed their robots to move through a course using the move blocks, which was also pretty challenging.

At the end the groups presented what they had achieved in the session to everyone. One of the teams displayed great team work and worked like real engineers, by writing down their results so they could keep track of what worked and what didn't.

And one of the students demonstrated a robot that was built at home called Bumperbot which said ouch! when it bumped into things. This used the touch sensors and the loop and loop interrupt blocks and took quite a while to program!

It was a great and productive session. Thanks to everyone for coming and see you all next time!
